RAFAEL JAEN (sounds HA-EN) is a professional costume designer, professor, and author. His design work for film, TV, and theater has received multiple accolades, and it has been featured in the Costume Design at The Turn of The Century 1990-2015 exhibit. He is the Recipient of the Kennedy Center Golden Medallion for Excellence in Theatre Education, the Salem State University Center for Creative and Performing Arts Life Achievement in The Arts Award, and the UMass Boston Manning Prize for Excellence in Teaching. He is also the recipient of a Joseph P. Healey Research Grant titled Secession, Entrepreneurship and Haute Couture in the USA During the Civil War Years. Additionally, Mr. Jaen has been included in the Boston Globe’s Most Stylish Bostonians annual list of tastemakers. He is currently the USITT Vice-President for Communications and the Interim National KCACTF Vice-Co-Chair. Jaen is the Chair of the Performing Arts Department and Associate Professor of Theatre at UMass Boston. He is the author of SHOWCASE by Focal Press, and Digital Costume Design and Collaboration by FOCAL Press/Routledge. Additionally, he co-wrote two chapters for the book Fashioning Horror: Dressing to Kill on Screen and Literature by Bloomsbury, and he is the Main Editor of the Backstage series, a publishing partnership between USITT and Routledge.
